Austin Ballroom Festival 2013

Dance International hosts the 14th Annual Austin Ballroom Festival, Saturday, May, 11, 2013, at the Ben Hur Shrine. Featured dancers include U.S. and World Salsa Champion Cristian Oviedo and partner Maria Zhukovskaya; Ryan and Tessa, professional Latin dancers from Dallas; and Gustavo Simplis and Veronica Quitalo from Esquina Tango in Austin. Afternoon dance workshops include the Waltz, Argentine Tango, International Rumba and Salsa. Vintage 15 plays music for dancing and enjoyment from 7-8 p.m. and a second set again after the performances (youth, adult and professional demonstrations). Evening attire is semi-formal.

Cine Las Americas International Film Festival | April 16-21

Cine Las Americas Film Festival 2013

The 16th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival runs April 16-21, 2013, and showcases contemporary films from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Iberian Peninsula. Films made by or about Latinos in the United States or the rest of the world, and films by or about indigenous groups of the Americas are also invited to participate. The festival program offers the latest features, narratives, documentaries, short films, animation, youth films and more. All films are subtitled in English. Festival venues include the Stateside at the Paramount, Alamo Drafthouse Village, the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and St. Edward’s University.

WobeonFEST 2013: Austin World Music Festival | April 6-7

Austin World Music FEST 2013

The inaugural WobeonFEST: Austin World Music Festival takes place this weekend, April 6-7, 2013, at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC). International and local artists spanning several world music genres will perform. The festival will be headlined by Afropop star Angelique Kidjo (from Benin) on April 6, and by Reggae star Collie Buddz (from Bermuda) on April 7. Other acts include award-winning Reggae band Dubtonic Kru (from Jamaica), Afro-Colombian band M.A.K.U. Sound System (from NYC) and Middle-Eastern Fusion band Atash (from Austin).
