Austin Parks and Recreation Department continues its Planet Music series with an afternoon of South Asian music featuring Ustad Ghulam Farid Nizami at the Asian American Resource Center on Saturday, July 12, from 7-9 p.m. Throughout his 39 year career, Nizami has become a master of Classical Indian, Ghazal, Geet, Qawwali, Bhajan, Pakistani Folk, and Sufi music. Teatro Vivo presents the Austin Latino New Play Festival, May 8-10, at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. The festival brings together Texas playwrights and audience members for staged readings and rich conversation about three Latino plays, each running just one night. After each reading, the playwright, director and actors participate in moderated talk-back sessions with the audience so attendees can provide feedback. Though the productions have Latino roots, they explore cross-cultural age-old themes and modern dilemmas that will surprise, challenge, engage and push the dramatic envelope for audience members accustomed to one-way conversations at the theater.
