The Texas Polka Festival & Symposium featuring the state’s European polka traditions of German, Czech and Polish heritage takes place Sat., Feb. 22, in Schulenburg, Texas.  Performances by The Boerne Village Band, Brian Marshall, Czech Melody Masters, Mark Halata, Santiago Jimenez Jr., and a showcase of contestants in the Big Squeeze Accordion Contest. Panel discussions include European history, Texas dance hall architecture, polka music history, culture and more. Tickets $0-15.

Fasching is the German version of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras or Rio’s Carnival. The annual festival celebrates the celebratory season right before Lent. Austin Saengerrunde will host a Fasching Masquerade Ball on Sat., Jan. 25, 2014, from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Best costume wins a $100 prize. Dance the night away to the tunes of Moonlight Express Orchestra. Join the Texas Wendish Heritage Society for its 25th Annual Texas Wendish Festival, Sunday, September 22, 2013.  Activities include live Czech music, children’s activities, a washer pitching competition, sauerkraut making demonstrations, Wendish Easter egg decorating demonstrations, quilting, classic cars and trucks, food and more.

The Texas Wendish Heritage Society preserves the history of the Texas Wends, Slavic immigrants from Lusatia, an area in eastern Germany.  Today the Wends of Lusatia are called Sorbs.
