AARC Asian Fantasy Character Workshop

The Asian American Resource Center invites children ages 4-10 to participate in an Asian Fantasy Character Design Workshop with award-winning children’s book artist and author, Yangsook Choi, on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Children will meet mythical characters from ancient Asia, and then design their own characters! Stories include Filipino vampire Sigbin, Korean goblin Tokebi, a child sumo wrestler Kintaro, and a Nine-Tailed Foxx from the Han dynasty. The 17th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival brings together Latino and indigenous filmmakers, actors, and screenwriters from all across the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula in Austin, Texas, April 22-27, 2014. This year’s festival honors and life and work of Efraín Gutiérrez, a pioneer of Mexican American cinema in Texas. All films are subtitled in English and are not rated. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a 17th century Mexican nun, celebrated playwright, mathematician, and poet in a time when women were restricted from education. In 1667, this self-taught scholar entered a convent, the only place she was allowed to continue educating herself. Her work is now looked upon as a defense for women’s right to education.
