MACC Salsa Dance Workshop

Join instructor Raul Ramirez for a FREE two-hour Salsa Dance Workshop, Saturday, May 25, 2013, from 2-4 p.m. at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. Mr. Ramirez will introduce participants to the fundamentals of leading and following steps to salsa music. No partner necessary. Limited space and preregistration required. Registration closes two business days prior to class date. Register by calling (512) 974-3785. You may register for any of the following dates: May 25, June 8, June 22, July 6, July 20, August 3, August 17, September 7 or September 21.

Things Celtic features music by Constant Billy, Sunday, May 26, 2013, from 3-5 p.m. FREE show. All ages welcome.

Take the traditional music of Britain and Ireland. Shake and stir in a little rock, classical and swing using an incredible, eclectic repertoire of intricate harmonies from probably the best all-around folk a-cappella singers in Houston. Add in the accompaniment of Bodhran, guitar, tin whistle, recorder and bouzouki to create stuff you just don’t hear every day. Add a dash of hilarious between-songs banter, and you have a duo that will leave you reeling.

Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center presents Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance & Culture Center’s “Esperanza de la Herencia,” Sunday, May 19, 2013, from 2-4 p.m. Each year, Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance (PRFDance) brings the rich heritage of Puerto Rico to life with a performance event dedicated to inspiring youth. This live music and dance recital showcases PRFDance cultural arts students backed by PRFDance and junior performing companies displaying the rich variety of Puerto Rico’s traditions. Bollywood Meets Borscht

 

The Jewish Community Relations Council and the Austin Hindu Community host Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt on Sunday, May 19, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. in the Community Hall of the Dell Jewish Community Center. This event is a joint fund raiser and cultural exchange party to provide school supplies for disadvantaged kids in the Manor and AISD School Districts. This family friendly event will provide a vegetarian Indian main course dinner with Jewish desserts, and activities for children and adults including music and dance performances as well as participation. Admission: Adults $18 | Kids Under Age 13–$6). Festive Indian attire encouraged.

Marigold Gateway to India Day of Henna 2013Join Marigold-Gateway to India for a Day of Henna with Mary Bright Side Marlatt, a talented henna artist, on Saturday, May 18, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Henna is the ancient art of applying designs on skin with a paste made from henna leaves. It is natural, completely safe and temporary and usually lasts about a week. Mary will have designs for you to pick from or you may bring your own. Your design can be as simple or as intricate as you like.  Cost will vary depending on design. Very simple designs start at $5.

Marigold-Gateway to India, is a unique, locally owned retail store that carries clothing for men, women, and children, as well as accessories, gifts, and home furnishings–all imported from India.
