The Menuhin Competition, the world’s leading competition for young violinists, takes place for the first time in the United States at the Butler School of Music on The University of Texas at #Austin campus, Feb. 21 to March 2. Two of the competitors currently reside in Texas: 12-year-old Claire Wells of Plano and Hao Miao, a University of North Texas undergraduate. Event includes concerts, master classes, and community activities with world-class musicians. Performances are open to the public and include #free and ticketed events.
The 16th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival runs April 16-21, 2013, and showcases contemporary films from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Iberian Peninsula. Films made by or about Latinos in the United States or the rest of the world, and films by or about indigenous groups of the Americas are also invited to participate. The festival program offers the latest features, narratives, documentaries, short films, animation, youth films and more. All films are subtitled in English. Festival venues include the Stateside at the Paramount, Alamo Drafthouse Village, the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and St. Edward’s University.
Canadians in Austin host the 11th Annual Canada Day Celebration on Sunday, July 1, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Third Base Sports Bar, 1717 West 6th Street. Canadians and non-Canadians alike are welcome to celebrate with Canadian beer specials, food, and fun. Each year, the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival brings together Latino and indigenous filmmakers, actors, and screenwriters from all over the world, including Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Cuba, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Peru, Canada, the United States, and more. The 15th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival runs April 24-29, 2012. Films are subtitled in English and include features, documentaries, and short films. Festival passes and general admission tickets are available. All screenings presented at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and at St. Edward’s University are free and open to the public.
