Austin Ballroom Festival 2013

Dance International hosts the 14th Annual Austin Ballroom Festival, Saturday, May, 11, 2013, at the Ben Hur Shrine. Featured dancers include U.S. and World Salsa Champion Cristian Oviedo and partner Maria Zhukovskaya; Ryan and Tessa, professional Latin dancers from Dallas; and Gustavo Simplis and Veronica Quitalo from Esquina Tango in Austin. Afternoon dance workshops include the Waltz, Argentine Tango, International Rumba and Salsa. Vintage 15 plays music for dancing and enjoyment from 7-8 p.m. and a second set again after the performances (youth, adult and professional demonstrations). Evening attire is semi-formal.

Cine Las Americas International Film Festival | April 16-21

Cine Las Americas Film Festival 2013

The 16th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival runs April 16-21, 2013, and showcases contemporary films from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Iberian Peninsula. Films made by or about Latinos in the United States or the rest of the world, and films by or about indigenous groups of the Americas are also invited to participate. The festival program offers the latest features, narratives, documentaries, short films, animation, youth films and more. All films are subtitled in English. Festival venues include the Stateside at the Paramount, Alamo Drafthouse Village, the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and St. Edward’s University.

New Year 2013 Esquina Tango AustinEsquina Tango Cultural Society of Austin celebrates New Year’s Eve with a tango dance party from 8 p.m. until 11:45 p.m. and a New Year’s countdown with party favors at midnight. Enjoy Latin music and dance until the last person goes home. No reservations needed. BYOB (champagne and wine welcome). You are also encouraged to provide snacks and sweets to share. Suggested donation $10-15 (cash or check only). Everyone is welcome.

Second Annual “Day of Tango” Festival – Sunday, Dec. 9

Day of Tango 2012Join The Academy of Tango-Texas for the second annual “Day of Tango” Festival in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, from 2 p.m. to midnight at the Ben Hur Shrine Temple Auditorium. Enjoy performances by international Tango champions, local Tango instructors, and professional performers; poetic presentations; Argentinean musicians; interactive dance lessons; a traditional Argentine Milonga; local vendors; raffle prizes; and food by Buenos Aires Café.

Workshops take place December 8, 10, and 11, with Yumiko & Ramada (2012 U.S.A. Tango Champions), Natasha & Diego (2011 World Tango Champions), and Roxana & Fabian (World Champion Tango Judges).

Proclaimed by the Mayor of Austin, Lee Leffingwell, and recognized by the State of Texas as a momentous event, The Day of Tango has been celebrated in Argentina every year on December 11 since 1965 in honor of the birth dates of the two men responsible for the creation and worldwide promotion of the Tango: Carlos Gardel and Julio De Caro. With the approval of La Academia Nacional del Tango de la Republica Argentina, the Academy of Tango-Texas is proud to bring this momentous celebration to Austin for the second time!

Austin Music and Culture Festival

Celebrate the many diverse cultures of Austin at the Music and Culture Festival, June 9-10, 2012, at The Utopia Theater, School of Social Work Building, UT Austin.  Saturday performances include Chinese traditional and fusion music and dance, Indian subcontinent traditional music, music from the British Isles, and Russian folk music.  Sunday’s lineup includes Czech music and folk songs, Middle Eastern world music, Latin and South American music, and African traditional music.  (See complete schedule below.)  Free AdmissionPark Free in Lot #12 on Martin Luther King between Trinity and San Jacinto, and walk one block north to the Social Work Building on San Jacinto Blvd.

15th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival

Each year, the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival brings together Latino and indigenous filmmakers, actors, and screenwriters from all over the world, including Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Cuba, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Peru, Canada, the United States, and more.  The 15th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival runs April 24-29, 2012.  Films are subtitled in English and include features, documentaries, and short films.   Festival passes and general admission tickets are available.  All screenings presented at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and at St. Edward’s University are free and open to the public.

2012 Pan Americana Festival (Official SXSW Showcase)

The 2012 Pan Americana Festival hosts Latino talent from Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, and the United States, March 16-17, 2012, at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.  The Pan Americana Festival offers a multicultural experience for the whole family, including music, dance, theatre and film, as well as visual, culinary, and literary arts.  FREE shows.  Doors open at 4 p.m.
