EL FLAMENCAZO 2012 — November 9-11

Not enough flamenco in Austin, you say? Well get ready for EL FLAMENCAZO 2012. Tonight, Illeana Gomez and Chayito Champion perform at Copa Bar & Grill, 217 Congress Avenue.They will be accompanied by Austin’s most exciting flamenco troupe, Flamencura.  Illeana Gomez is one of America’s most in-demand, up-and-coming young flamenco dancers. Don’t miss her unique brand of flamenco fire Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, from 8-12 p.m.  Admission $12 at the door.

This special event kicks off a weekend series of Special Flamenco Music Workshops at Flamencura Music & Dance Studio, including a FREE Adult Beginner Flamenco Dance Workshop on Saturday Nov. 10, at 12 Noon.  Additional workshops include Guitar Workshops with Jose Manuel Tejeda from Havana, Cuba;  Percussion Workshops with Flamencura’s Pepe Gaytan; and Cante (singing) Workshops with Isaí Chacón. “The Red Shoes: A Flamenco Fairytale” @ The Long Center for the Performing Arts, Oct 26-27

A’lante Flamenco Austin proudly presents “The Red Shoes: A Flamenco Fairytale,” an innovative new flamenco interpretation of the deliciously dark fable by Hans Christian Andersen. The production explores the attractions and dangers of giving in to temptation. Once the world of control and reason is left behind to embrace ecstasy, chaos takes over. The evening of new dance will feature choreography by A’lante artistic director Olivia Chacón and a mixture of original compositions and traditional flamenco interpreted and led by music director Isaí Chacón.  Tickets $22.  Friday and Saturday, Oct 26-27, 2012.

15th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival

Each year, the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival brings together Latino and indigenous filmmakers, actors, and screenwriters from all over the world, including Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Cuba, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Peru, Canada, the United States, and more.  The 15th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival runs April 24-29, 2012.  Films are subtitled in English and include features, documentaries, and short films.   Festival passes and general admission tickets are available.  All screenings presented at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center and at St. Edward’s University are free and open to the public.

2012 Pan Americana Festival (Official SXSW Showcase)

The 2012 Pan Americana Festival hosts Latino talent from Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, and the United States, March 16-17, 2012, at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.  The Pan Americana Festival offers a multicultural experience for the whole family, including music, dance, theatre and film, as well as visual, culinary, and literary arts.  FREE shows.  Doors open at 4 p.m.
