New Russian Drama Festival 2012Breaking String Theater presents its third annual New Russian Drama Festival, February 8-10, at the Salvage Vanguard Theater. Celebrated Russian playwright Yury Klavdiev joins Breaking String Theater for a five-day Austin residency, where he will join visiting artists for a weekend of discussions around contemporary Russian theater, and Mr. Klavdiev’s work. The main event will be “Strike: Two Plays by Yury Klavdiev.” Directed by Graham Schmidt, Breaking String Theater’s Artistic Director, and presented back-to-back, “I am the Machine Gunner” and “Martial Arts” launch audiences into Klavdiev’s world, inspired by his upbringing on the mean streets of a Russian industrial slum. A one-night only guest performance of Golden Hornet Project: Prokofiev’s “Visions Fugitives” takes place Sunday, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m. Staged readings and panel discussions are FREE and open to the public.

Breaking String Theater of Austin presents “Vodka, F***ing and Television“ by Maksym Kurochkin, one of Russia’s greatest living playwrights, Nov. 29 – Dec. 15, 2012, at Hyde Park Theatre.

“Vodka, F***ing and Television” is a comedy set in the close confines of a struggling writer’s apartment. The three vices bedeviling the struggling writer—vodka, f***ing and television—are transformed into full-fledged characters, and each is given a chance to justify their presence in the hero’s life, or get the boot. (Directed by Liz Fisher and Translated by John C. Hanlon)

Breaking String Theater was founded in 2007 and quickly received  awards and nominations for outstanding productions of classical and contemporary Russian plays. Through its annual New Russian Drama Festival, Breaking String hosts sensational Russian playwrights for five-day residencies to accompany the American premieres of great Russian plays. Breaking String Theater is an important connector between Austin and Moscow theater communities.

Austin Music and Culture Festival

Celebrate the many diverse cultures of Austin at the Music and Culture Festival, June 9-10, 2012, at The Utopia Theater, School of Social Work Building, UT Austin.  Saturday performances include Chinese traditional and fusion music and dance, Indian subcontinent traditional music, music from the British Isles, and Russian folk music.  Sunday’s lineup includes Czech music and folk songs, Middle Eastern world music, Latin and South American music, and African traditional music.  (See complete schedule below.)  Free Admission.  Park Free in Lot #12 on Martin Luther King between Trinity and San Jacinto, and walk one block north to the Social Work Building on San Jacinto Blvd.

The New Russian Drama Festival features visits from and spotlights the work of Maksym Kurochkin – one of Russia’s most innovative and popular playwrights – and John Freedman – Moscow based critic, playwright, scholar and translator. Through a series of staged readings, conversations and receptions with its Russian partners, Breaking String Theater offers Austin audiences unique access and context to the latest developments in one of the world’s most important and vibrant theater communities.  FREE and open to the public.
