Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center presents Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance & Culture Center’s “Esperanza de la Herencia,” Sunday, May 19, 2013, from 2-4 p.m. Each year, Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance (PRFDance) brings the rich heritage of Puerto Rico to life with a performance event dedicated to inspiring youth. This live music and dance recital showcases PRFDance cultural arts students backed by PRFDance and junior performing companies displaying the rich variety of Puerto Rico’s traditions. The Jewish Community Relations Council and the Austin Hindu Community host Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt on Sunday, May 19, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. in the Community Hall of the Dell Jewish Community Center. This event is a joint fund raiser and cultural exchange party to provide school supplies for disadvantaged kids in the Manor and AISD School Districts. This family friendly event will provide a vegetarian Indian main course dinner with Jewish desserts, and activities for children and adults including music and dance performances as well as participation. Admission: Adults $18 | Kids Under Age 13–$6). Festive Indian attire encouraged.

Marigold Gateway to India Day of Henna 2013Join Marigold-Gateway to India for a Day of Henna with Mary Bright Side Marlatt, a talented henna artist, on Saturday, May 18, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Henna is the ancient art of applying designs on skin with a paste made from henna leaves. It is natural, completely safe and temporary and usually lasts about a week. Mary will have designs for you to pick from or you may bring your own. Your design can be as simple or as intricate as you like.  Cost will vary depending on design. Very simple designs start at $5.

Austin Latino New Play Festival 2013

Teatro Vivo presents the Austin Latino New Play Festival, May 16-18, 2013, at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. The festival brings together Texas playwrights and audience members for staged readings and rich conversation about three new scripts, each running just one night. After each reading, the playwright, director and actors participate in moderated talk-back sessions with the audience so attendees can provide feedback. Though the productions have Latino roots, they explore cross-cultural age-old themes and modern dilemmas that will surprise, challenge, engage and push the dramatic envelope for audience members accustomed to one-way conversations at the theater.
